Can I connect home cinema system to pc?

I have a sony home cinema system which consists of 4 surround speakers, 1 subwoofer and a smaller "central" speaker. which are all connected to the main box which is the dvd/cd player (sorry for my lack of technological terminology). This system is connected to the tv by an hdmi cable. Is it possible to connect this system to my laptop? Perhaps this would require some kind of compatability program?
