Internet speed???????

Is it true there is faster internet than what I have? I've a 56k modem. Its fast as my computer last year had a 14.4 k modem. the phone dials when I connect to the net. Is there really faster ways to get internet?!?!?! My friend says he has cable? I thought that was just TV. Is there really faster internet than dialup?
