Will external dialup modems be compatible with new laptops?

My girlfriend is having too much trouble picking up free wifi from a particular spot, and I was wondering could I slap an external dialup modem on for her to just use AOL........... she has a new laptop with windows 7 and I was wondering if they would even be compatible at all
