Software to compress images on internet browser?

i frequently visit graphic intensive sites but don't need all the pictures. Is there any software to compress or resize these images, so I can atleast make out some of the picture and then click on it if I need it. I remember dialup speed software would do this, and I am wandering if anyone knows of any software free to download.
